  • After living in Tel Aviv, Russian reporter shot dead in Kiev

A Kremlin critic who was reportedly shot and killed in Kiev has suddenly turned up alive at a news conference in Ukraine.

Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian MP who serves as an adviser to the interior minister, said on Facebook that investigators would be looking at "Russian spy agencies' efforts to get rid of those who are trying to tell the truth about what is going on in Russia and Ukraine".

The Committee to Protect Journalists in NY said on Twitter that "Ukrainian authorities should conduct a swift and thorough investigation" into the apparent murder. He spoke and wrote about leaving the country because of the threats against him and his family.

Mr Borodin had written about the death of people said to be Russian mercenaries in Syria.

"I was lucky. A second birthday, it turns out", Mr Babchenko wrote. "And now I am a bad soldier".

He described his experience in the Chechen conflicts - which saw Moscow suppress a separatist insurgency in the North Caucasus - in a book published in English under the title "One Soldier's War".

Babchenko, 41, rose to fame as a war correspondent in Russian Federation.

Babchenko is one of at least a dozen Kremlin critics who've been murdered or died under mysterious circumstances over the past decade.

Kiev has in recent years seen a number of deadly attacks on high-profile journalists and politicians.

Can the Trump-Kim Summit Be Rescheduled?
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the U.S. and North Korea should not give up, saying "nerves of steel" were required. In April, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and South Korea's Moon Jae-in held a historic summit in the "truce village" of Panmunjom.

Shortly after Babchenko's death was announced, Moscow and Kiev began blaming each other for the killing of the journalist, who is a vocal critic of the Kremlin and left Russian Federation in 2017, saying he no longer felt safe.

Some of his articles and posts outraged many Russians.

In early 2017, after spending years fearing he would be arrested, beaten, or worse, Babchenko left Russian Federation. He moved to Kiev after living in the Czech Republic and Israel.

After moving to Kiev last autumn he had been working as a host for Crimean TV station ATR.

Known for his caustic style and earthy language, Babchenko endlessly promoted doom-and-gloom scenarios for Russian Federation under Putin.

Mr Gritsak said his service had received information about a Russian plan to assassinate Mr Babchenko, and had managed to prevent it.

"I would like to apologise for what you have all had to go through", Mr Babchenko said to reports this afternoon.

He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, Ukrainian police said. "Dying is always scary".
