Top House Democrat Requests Probe Into How FBI Source's Name Was Leaked

  • Outsider advisers urged Trump to attack DOJ

The woman who oversaw the Obama White House's response to the Russian election attack said she was never briefed on the FBI's use of an informant to investigate the Trump campaign and that it was "ridiculous" for President Trump to claim that the matter amounted to "one of the biggest political scandals in us history". Law enforcement officials have countered that using such informants amid counterintelligence investigations - which the FBI had launched in late July 2016 into Russian efforts to penetrate the Trump campaign - is standard procedure.

And late Sunday, we learned that the Justice Department has given in to Trump's demand and ordered its inspector general to investigate whether the FBI improperly investigated Trump's campaign. Nunes also attended the meeting on Thursday. The deputy attorney general relented after Trump's demand that the Justice Department comply.

Republicans had requested the information for weeks, issuing a subpoena and warning top DOJ officials that if they refused they would hold them contempt of Congress.

This is also an administration that, early in 2017, invited Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) to the White House complex to view classified documents that it believed would help bolster Trump's off-the-cuff claim about phones at Trump Tower having been wiretapped during the campaign.

The president intensified his attacks on the probe this week, calling it "spygate" and tweeting Thursday that it was "Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in USA history".

The presence of a White House lawyer, Emmet Flood, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly at the outset of the briefings raised immediate alarms from Democrats, who said they were concerned officials could use information from the meetings to the president's legal advantage. Rest assured, if the meetings had produced even an iota of evidence that there was anything inappropriate in the FBI's counterintelligence investigation, they would have run to Fox News to trumpet their outrage so fast the soles of their shoes would have melted.

Several years before Halper had infiltrated the Trump campaign and met with some of Donald Trump's top advisors, Halper claimed that a female Russian academic attending a seminar in 2014 was actually a spy and that the event sponsor, Cambridge Intelligence Seminar (CIS), was influenced by Russia. But it seems that even before he became president, people around the world knew that Donald Trump was a man who could be bought.

James dominates as Cavs down Celtics to stay alive
Jeff Green scored 14 points (two off his 2018 playoff high) and Larry Nance Jr. added 10 points seven rebounds in Love's absence. Jaylen Brown scored 27 for Boston, who led by five at the end of a spirited first quarter but finally had no answer for James.

"I don't have a great answer for them", Comey said of social media companies including Facebook and Twitter, which were major venues for what US intelligence agencies have said was a Russian-sponsored effort to help President Donald Trump win the 2016 USA election.

Democratic officials have pushed back on allegations that the FBI's use of an informant constitutes spying on the Trump campaign, as the president and his allies have alleged.

While there is no constitutional provision that says the president's personal lawyer can not make a statement at a classified briefing, legal scholars expressed misgivings. In other words, they were trying to find out what the Russians were up to and whom they had compromised-if anything, to protect Trump and his campaign from Russia.

In response to the tweet, the Justice Department immediately asked its inspector general to expand its ongoing investigation to look into whether there was any politically motivated surveillance of the campaign and agreed to hold the classified briefings. They're lies. They should have been greeted with headlines reading, "President Trump lies to public about Russian Federation investigation".

Listening to Trump drone on repeatedly that Mueller's investigation of Russia's efforts to discredit democracy is a "witch hunt", the biggest in history - forget Salem, millions of Americans tell pollsters the "witch hunt" in Washington must end. And the White House said Kelly would organize the meeting with House lawmakers to discuss the documents, although he and other White House staffers would not be present.

Giuliani said Sunday that he doesn't believe the alleged informant was being protected, calling the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice "a little hypocritical".
