Tropical Storm Warnings continue for almost the entire Gulf Coast of Florida, and a Storm Surge Watch continues for coastal regions from the Nature Coast to Pensacola.

While the heavy rains could produce flooding, widespread flooding does not appear likely, but we are expecting 2-4 inches of rain areawide with areas of East Alabama possibly seeing up to six inches with possibly higher totals in isolated areas.

This video shows Longboat Key, which was still under a tropical storm warning, and the beach erosion and the surf.

A storm surge watch is in effect from the Suwannee River to Navarre, in the Florida Panhandle.

Meteorologists are calling Alberto a 'subtropical storm.' What the heck is that?

At 5 a.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center updated its forecast to say Alberto, positioned about 125 miles south of Destin, had winds of up to 65 mph and was expected to cross the northern Gulf Coast in the warning area Monday afternoon or evening. Alberto will bring widespread heavy rain in the Panhandle of Florida and Alabama later today and tonight. Further strengthening is anticipated prior to landfall, which is now projected to be early Monday morning in the vicinity of Panama City Beach.

MS governor Phil Bryant has declared a state of emergency as the storm moves toward the state's coast.

Gusty showers began lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding. The Florida Division of Emergency Management said in a statement Sunday that a mandatory evacuation has been issued in Franklin County for all barrier islands there and those in the county living directly on the coast in mobile homes or in recreation vehicle parks. Forecasters cautioned that heavy rain and tropical storm conditions could reach the northern Gulf Coast well ahead of the center of Alberto making landfall. "We're talking eight to 12 inches of rain this weekend, and storm surges on the Gulf Coast".

The provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Matanzas and Ciego de Avila are also hit by the storm.Alberto is the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, which officially begins in June.

Alberto, which spun up days before the formal start of the 2018 hurricane season, was moving north at about 20 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained winds near 64 kilometres per hour, and higher gusts, on Saturday, the NWS said. The weather had scared off the usual crowds expected for the holiday weekend.

The NHC defines subtropical storm as a "subtropical cyclone" in which the maximum sustained wind speed - using the US one-minute average - is 39 miles per hour or higher.

"It was a 50-50 chance of whether to come down and we chose to chance it", Gasper said. The Tampa Bay is not longer under a storm surge watch at the moment, but that could, of course, change. Essentially, the characteristics of a subtropical system mean it lacks the punch to quickly increase in strength and become a hurricane.
