Can the Trump-Kim Summit Be Rescheduled?

26 May, 2018, 17:11 | Author: Ted Wilson
  • Donald Trump says US North Korea summit ‘could’ happen on 12 June

"We're talking to them now", he said of the North Koreans.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the U.S. and North Korea should not give up, saying "nerves of steel" were required. Worldwide journalists were present, but the USA government can't verify the site's destruction.

President Trump's letter to Kim Jong-un, announcing the USA would be pulling out of its long-awaited summit with North Korea, has been dragged on social media.

"Democrats are so obviously rooting against us in our negotiations with North Korea", he tweeted.

"They know that if they start resuming testing all of that goodwill, all of that change in Kim's reputation, all of that will go out the window very quickly", she said.

But the latest developments also exemplified how quickly aspirations for successful talks between North Korea and the US - which remain technically at war - can rise and fall.

In a letter to Kim, Trump said Thursday he would not go ahead with the summit in Singapore, following what the White House called a "trail of broken promises" by the North.

In April, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and South Korea's Moon Jae-in held a historic summit in the "truce village" of Panmunjom.

Just before Trump announced the cancellation of the meeting, North Korea declared it had "completely" dismantled its nuclear test site in the country's far northeast, in a carefully choreographed goodwill gesture ahead of the summit.

Just a day earlier, a top North Korean official lambasted the Trump administration for "unlawful and outrageous acts" - a reference to comments from the White House about a "Libya-style" coerced denuclearization.

"A full denuclearisation of North Korea" should involve giving "North Korea a guarantee of their sovereignty and inviolability", he said.

And given Trump's entertainment background, other experts said it would be wise not to attempt to divine the machinations of the mercurial president until the dust settles.

Man opens fire at Trump's Miami golf resort
According to CBS4 News in Miami. "We are not saying this is terrorism...we are not discounting anything at this point", he said. His neighbors were evacuated Friday morning as officers swept the area looking for booby traps, Perez said.

Pyongyang on Friday said in a statement that it is still willing to "sit with the US side" for talks "at any time".

What has Trump said about talks with Kim?

He said everyone plays games.

The White House has repeatedly offered mixed messages.

"The two leaders candidly exchanged views about making the North Korea-U.S. summit a successful one and about implementing the Panmunjom Declaration", South Korea's presidential spokesman said in a statement.

USA officials argue that the administration has already won a great deal from North Korea, including a moratorium on missile testing and the release of three American prisoners, without giving up anything in return.

Trump's letter caught allies by surprise.

Summit meetings of this kind usually involve months of detailed planning and some analysts have expressed disquiet that private discussion of policy differences appears to have been replaced by "diplomacy by tweet", our correspondent adds.

Trump on Saturday revived the prospect that the June 12 summit would proceed, saying the United States was "having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the summit".

And it's between North Korea and the US right now. There, former leader Colonel Gaddafi gave up his nascent nuclear programme only for him to be killed by Western-backed rebels a few years later.

He told a press conference this afternoon: "It was a very nice statement they put out; we'll see what happens".

In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's criticisms had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.
