US identifies suspect in major CIA leak

  • US names suspect in Vault 7 leaks but unable to file charges

"Because of the nature of the underlying investigation, that requires consultation with people outside of our office, which we are doing as quickly as we can".

The cryptic description led assistant federal defender Sabrina Shroff, who entered the case in March, to demand more.

Schulte was arrested in August, but prosecutors have been unable to bring charges against him.

Laroche said it involved an ongoing grand jury investigation and added, "I don't think we have an obligation to disclose it at this time, but we certainly have had discussions with Shroff about the nature of the underlying investigation". According to an FBI affidavit, investigators obtained passwords from Schulte's phone and decrypted a 54 GB file stored on a virtual machine that allegedly contained 10,000 offensive images and videos.

It's unclear why Schulte has not been charged or cleared in the breach.

In a statement to the Post, Schulte proclaimed his innocence.

Arizona basketball: Suns 'don't know yet' if they'll pick Deandre Ayton
As for the Suns, they have three great candidates for No. 1, all with ties to either Arizona or new Phoenix coach Igor Kokoskov. The Sacramento Kings , the Atlanta Hawks, the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks will round out the top five picks.

But Schulte has not faced charged in connection with the theft - though he was busted on unrelated kiddie porn charges.

The collection of 8,000 documents contained detailed information about network intrusion tools used by the CIA to gain intelligence (see 7 Facts: "Vault 7" CIA Hacking Tool Dump by WikiLeaks). President Donald Trump had told a television host then, "I just want people to know the Central Intelligence Agency was hacked, and a lot of things taken". He quit the spy agency in 2016 to work in the private sector. The government immediately had enough evidence to establish that he was a target of that investigation.

A government prosecutor disagreed with what he called the "characterization" by Schulte's attorney that "those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure".

"Those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure", said assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York Matthew Laroche. Photos of the assault - some of which included Schulte's hands - were allegedly found on Schulte's phone, Laroche said at the hearing. "He remains a target of that investigation".

The leak, which was referred to as "Vault 7", was one of the largest in U.S. history, but in August, prosecutors separately charged Schulte with possession of child pornography - agents apparently found 10,000 images on a server he built as a business in 2009 while at university in Austin, Texas. A lawyer for Schulte told The New York Times: "This case has been dragging since August 2017".
