  • A group of men crashed a car at the gates of Pekanbaru station in Sumatra before attacking with swords wounding two. A fifth assailant hit and killed another police officer while trying to drive away and was later arrested

Four men who attacked an Indonesian police headquarters with samurai swords were shot dead Wednesday and one officer also died, authorities said, days after a wave of deadly suicide bombings claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group rocked the country.

According to Channel NewsAsia, at least one of the attackers was wielding a sword and wounded two officers, while another allegedly had a bomb strapped to his body.

Police said they shot dead four of the police station attackers and later arrested another who had fled.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge as the world's biggest Muslim majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

Leahy comments on White House aide mocking Senator John McCain

State news agency Antara said two journalists who had been at the police headquarters were also hurt in the attack.

Media were at the station to cover a press conference about a drug bust when the attack happened.

Its worst-ever attack was the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people, including locals and foreign tourists.

The attack followed multiple terrorist strikes recently in the country, including the riot in a jail in the capital last week, suicide bombings in three churches on Sunday in Surabaya city, the provincial capital of East Java, and a suicide bombing in the police headquarters in the city, which left at least 28 dead with dozens injured.

The church bombing family - whose father was named a local JAD leader - and two other families linked to this week's attacks knew each other and were part of the same Koran study group, police said.
