USA should not have undertaken harsh interrogations — Trump CIA nominee

  • Haspel Now Says CIA Waterboarding Never Should Have Happened

Warner, of Virginia, is the third Democrat to say he'll vote for Haspel. The letter comes as Warner has yet to announce whether he will back Haspel.

Senator Mark Warner said it had been a "difficult decision", but cited Haspel's 33-year career at the CIA and support from its workforce and past intelligence community leaders.

Warner is now the third Democrat to support Haspel's confirmation, while two Republicans have said they will oppose her. Asked about the Iran nuclear deal that Trump withdrew from last week, she said that Iran had continued to substantially meet its commitments, including by observing limits on its centrifuges and amounts of low-enriched uranium and by not pursuing the original design of its heavy water research reactor. Most importantly, I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the President if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture.

He said that if Trump, whom he described as a "strong-willed man", underwent waterboarding, "he may see its harshness and think that's exactly what we need".

Sen. Rand Paul is facing increasing pressure to back President Trump's nominee to head the CIA, Gina Haspel, as the libertarian lawmaker's hometown newspaper urged him to back his fellow Kentuckian.

Israeli troops fire on Palestinians protesting US Embassy in Jerusalem; 7 killed
The Trump administration bypassed years of costly construction on a new embassy by repurposing an existing consular building. The relocation of the embassy from Tel Aviv has infuriated the Palestinians, who seek east Jerusalem as a future capital.

But most of the written questions, like in her hearing, addressed issues related to the CIA's defunct torture program and her role in it.

"I'm going to support Gina Haspel's nomination to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency".

Notably absent from Haspel's letter was any statement about her role in destroying 92 videotapes of interrogations carried out at the Thailand facility.

Haspel had assured senators last week at her confirmation hearing that in hindsight, methods such as waterboarding - viewed as torture by critics - harmed America's image in the world, and she would not restart the program.

Green beret USA army and former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy passed the waterboarding (simulated drowning) in support of the appointment of Gina Haesang for the post of CIA Director. Rodriguez has said publicly that Haspel knew he meant to take the matter into his own hands and issue the order, because he believed he had the authority to do so.
