One user on the Chinese social network Weibo complained the retailer may have intentionally left out Taiwan and other islands claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea. "We've learned that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets failed to reflect the correct map of China".

Hundreds of people complained on Gap's official account on China's Weibo microblogging website, the daily said.

Gap said in a statement it "sincerely apologized for this unintentional error" and has subsequently pulled the t-shirt from the Chinese market and destroyed it.

Global fashion brand Zara was also ordered by the internet regulator in Shanghai to update its website after listing Taiwan as a country, medical equipment maker Medtronic was also ordered to publicly apologise on its website for making the same mistake.

The US retailer store has said its apology that it would implement "rigorous reviews" to prevent such things from happening again.

But this isn't the first time an global company has found itself in hot water over China territorial issues.

On April 25, it sent dozens of worldwide airlines a written threat of severe punishments if they don't change their websites to declare that Taiwan is part of China - a move that provoked a strong pushback from the White House.

Self-ruled Taiwan is claimed by Beijing as Chinese territory, and has become one of China's most sensitive issues and a potential military flashpoint.

Chinese authorities in January blocked Marriott's (MAR) websites and apps for a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and apps.

Delta Air Lines, hotel operator Marriott and fashion brand Zara are among businesses that have apologized to China for referring to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Tibet as countries on websites or promotional material.

"This is Orwellian nonsense and part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies", the White House said in a statement.
