Male Hollywood stars must take pay cuts, says Salma Hayek at Cannes

Hayek isn't the only one calling for men to take a pay cut.

Hayek is a longtime champion for change in the film industry, helping set up the Women in Motion talks at Cannes four years ago with her husband, Kering luxury goods boss Francois-Henri Pinault.

"We are 82 women, representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes film festival in 1946", Cate Blanchett read from a statement on behalf of the collective.

It will require not only fearless salary negotiation, but also, perhaps, some male actors' giving up a portion of their inflated salaries to be able to pay women salaries that are on par with theirs, she said.

In a discussion with the Radio Times, Cumberbatch called on male actors to step up to the plate and refuse to take more money than what their female counterparts were being paid, even going as far as to reject work outright.

Hayek has been very vocal about the #MeToo movement and the fight for gender equality. "Otherwise they will kill the movie". "You feel it. It's a very palpable atmosphere". "It worked. And I think we should enjoy it".

Retailer Gap apologises for T-shirts with 'incorrect' map of China

Hayek wrote an essay in The New York Times in December that accused Weinstein of sexual harassment during the making of the film "Frida".

Weinstein's lawyers denied the claims made by Hayek, stating: "All of the sexual allegations as portrayed by Salma are not accurate and others who witnessed the events have a different account of what transpired".

The unusual thing about Weinstein's denial, Hayek noted, was not that he refuted the claims, but that he or his team said anything about them at all - most of Weinstein's sexual abuse accusers have not been directly addressed by the producer.

Hayek said it was hard to hire known female writers and directors in the United States now, as studios are snapping them up trying to catch up with the public mood.

"We should have been angrier sooner", she said.

"Men have the opportunity to rethink what it means to be a man, and with this comes a lot of freedom".
