Sen. Rand Paul is criticizing Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump's pick to head the CIA, for not declassifying her role in the agency's "extreme rendition and torture-by-proxy", arguing that the lack of candor disqualified her from the role.

Others disagree two senators both from states that voted Trump, have backed Haspel's nomination. "At an IN campaign rally this week, Trump referred to the Indian senator as "Sleepin' Joe" Donnelly," called him a "swamp creature", and urged the crowd to vote for his Republican opponent.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Thursday that the USA should restart torture interrogation tactics.

One of the Senators, Joe Donnelly from IN, has been very vocal IN his support of Haspel, he says he has spoken with her on a number of topics and believes she is just what the Central Intelligence Agency and the country needs.

Haspel, currently the CIA's deputy director, would replace Mike Pompeo, who is now Secretary of State. In his piece, Paul questions her involvement in the case of Maher Arar, a Canadian engineer whose transfer to and torture in Syria was recounted in a 2005 New Yorker article.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, was eyed as one Democrat who may vote for her, as well as Angus King, I-Maine.

Iran still implementing commitments under nuclear deal, IAEA says
The chief inspector of the worldwide atomic energy Agency ( IAEA ) on Iran's nuclear capabilities Tero Varjoranta resigned. Varjoranta was Deputy Director General of the IAEA, and head of the Department of nuclear safety.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was tortured during almost six years of captivity during Vietnam, opposes Haspel's nomination. It wound down during President George W. Bush's second term, then was banned by President Barack Obama after stirring domestic and global outrage. And in 2005, under her boss's direction, she drafted a cable ordering the agency to destroy more than 90 videotapes of its interrogation of that man.

Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence visited IN earlier this week IN what was billed as a tax reform rally, but practically speaking was an opportunity for Mr. Trump to blast "swamp person" Donnelly for his association with the Democratic Party and voting record.

Haspel "should be confirmed", Rivera said Friday on Fox & Friends.

Even if they all oppose her, and Flake joins the opposition, Haspel should have 50 votes for her confirmation, the bare minimum needed to win.

On Saturday morning, Sen.

The Intelligence Committee is expected to hold a vote on Haspel on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the panel's timing, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would then like to hold a full confirmation vote the following week before the Senate adjourns for the week-long Memorial Day recess.
