'Around 200' apps banned thus far in Facebook's massive app audit

  • Facebook says it has suspended around 200 apps so far as part of data misuse audit

Since suspending Cambridge Analytica for using an app to exploit user information almost two months ago, Facebook says it has now suspended an additional 200 more apps. This first stage of review may have resulted in the suspension of hundreds of apps but that doesn't mean if all of them actually engaged in data misuse. The update claims that Facebook has investigated thousands of apps hosted on the site and has suspended about 200 of them. If an app misled users in how their data was being used, it could be banned from Facebook.

We will remind, earlier it became clear that Cambridge Analytica has used the personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users for the targeting of political advertising.

On March 21, Zuckerberg promised to investigate all apps that had access to large amounts of information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014. "Thousands" of apps have been examined, pending what the social network describes as a "thorough investigation" into whether these apps misappropriated user information. You should check this page from time to time to see if any other apps have been added to it as Facebook's investigation continues.

If the apps are found to have misused people's data, they will be banned and the affected Facebook users notified.

The company said teams of internal and external experts will conduct interviews and lead on-site inspections of certain apps during its ongoing audit.

The investigation isn't the only measure Facebook has taken to protect its users.

British lawmakers have issued a similar demand, and Facebook told a panel there investigating the company that it would make a decision about Zuckerberg's potential appearance by Monday. (Stillwell's Cambridge email has been taken down and he did not immediately respond to The Outline's request for comment on Facebook).

Of course, all this depends on Facebook's definitions of misuse.
