USA to help North Korea's economy if it denuclearizes

  • President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are planning the first face-to-face North Korea-U.S. summit since the end of the Korean War in 1953

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday promised that Washington would work to rebuild North Korea's sanctions-crippled economy if it agreed to surrender its nuclear arsenal.

North Korea said journalists from other countries, including the United States, South Korea, China, Russia and Britain, will be invited to cover the event, to "show in a transparent manner the dismantlement of the northern nuclear test ground to be carried out".

Pompeo said the U.S. would remain on board to help develop the North's economy, which has been devastated by its own mismanagement and crippling global sanctions.

All tunnels at the testing ground in the northeast of the country will be destroyed by explosion, with observation and research facilities also to be removed, along with ground-based guard units.

But Libya's program was not almost as advanced as North Korea and the country had not already stockpiled weapons.

After a year of sharply rising tension and fears of war over North Korea's defiant nuclear and missile tests, inter-Korean relations have improved dramatically this year.

Kim had already revealed plans to shut down the test site by the end of May during his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month.

When Trump and Kim do sit down, the two relatively untested leaders will be presented with a puzzle that has stymied seasoned diplomats for decades.

Anchor: KBS held an exclusive interview with the USA acting Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy Heather Nauert.

I'm sorry but I think we have to be cautious about players who don't play for us. "Enough is enough. Barcelona boss Bartomeu in an interview said: "I don't want to talk about players at other clubs".

The closure was n announced in May - without giving precise dates - of only known nuclear testing facilities in North Korea, those of Punggye-ri, near border with China, to journalists and global experts who will be invited to attend Process.

"Thinking back, it was all nonsense but back then, I had no other choice", she said.

Pompeo said he had a "good" conversation with North Koreans and did his best to convey the USA message to them. Pompeo said he told Kim of that hope during his brief visit to Pyongyang, where he also he finalized details of the upcoming summit.

They said working in China had been their dream because they could earn in a month what they made in a year in North Korea. It was the sixth nuclear test by Pyongyang.

Still, analysts wanting to be optimistic about the diplomatic process say that declaring the site finished and taking some steps towards closing it would support their theory that Kim is making an effort, just like this weeks release of three Americans who had been held in North Korea.

The Trump-Kim summit is scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore.

Journalists asked Pompeo what such a denuclearization would look like and if it meant carrying out inspections in North Korean nuclear plants.

He said the United States wants to ensure that its efforts yield the end result, that North Korea should not become a threat to the world.
