  • Iran, Israel Tensions Unlikely to Evolve Into Conventional Warfare

Israel responded by hitting 70 Iran-linked sites in Syria.

Vowing to severely hurt those trying to attack Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "Iran crossed a red line", forcing his army to strike its bases in Syria. None of the rockets reached Israeli-held territory, with most falling short and several intercepted, it said.

An Israeli military spokesman said the rockets were fired by Iran's Quds Force, a special forces unit affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, marking the first time Iranian forces have ever fired directly on Israeli troops.

Israel retaliated with what appeared to be surface-to-surface missiles, and Syrian anti-aircraft batteries hosed the sky with fire in an effort to intercept them.

The shadow war that Israel and Iran were fighting in Syria has now broken out into the open.

That attack killed 15 people, including eight Iranians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"All of the targets that we engaged were effectively destroyed", he added, causing "significant damage" to the Iranians.

The airstrikes were in response to what they said was an Iranian rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan heights.

In a separate statement, the Israeli army claimed its fighter jets had struck some 50 military targets associated with Iran's Quds Force inside Syrian territory.

That night, mere hours after Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin met, Israel launched its massive attack in Syria, giving rise to speculation that Putin had given Israel a green light for the assault.

Russia, she affirmed, "will officially say they're neutral, but in reality, they will play both sides. I hope we have finished with this round and that everybody understood".

Israel said it attacked Iranian intelligence facilities and logistics compounds, a military base and other posts, as well as munition storage warehouses of the Quds forces at Damascus worldwide airport.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman sought to calm concerns that the major escalation along a highly volatile frontier was the opening salvo in a wider war. It said none of its warplanes was hit.

Russia, which like Iran has intervened in Syria's war on the side of the government, called for "restraint on all sides" Thursday.

Last month, an attack on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province killed seven Iranian military personnel.

"Our reaction was a effect", the Israeli leader said in a video posted on social media.

This escalation is only the second time that Iran has been accused of directly targeting Israeli soil, following a failed drone attack in February. Expectations of a flare-up in the Middle East were stoked by President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday that he was withdrawing the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

The Israeli politician told i24News: "Europe has lost it". Israel has not commented on the strike. In many ways, Iran and Israel are very similar: youthful populations who are far more progressive and tolerant than their hardline right-wing leaders who maintain an iron grip on politics within their borders. The Golan Heights region borders Syria. "We will sweep them into the sea". "Certainly, it is Israel's right to take such steps as necessary to defend itself against this aggression".

"The situation, unfortunately, is very acute".

"We believe that all issues must be resolved through dialogue", said Lavrov.

"It would also be to some extent helpful to the Kremlin if Iran is weakened because this would mean it will limit Iran's ability to compete with Russian Federation in the Middle East in the future", said Borschchevskaya.

Russian Federation is the major power broker in Syria, where its military intervention turned the tide in favor of government forces, and Israel coordinates military action there with Moscow.

The military escalation comes at a worrying time, after the US pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal with active support from the Israeli government.
