"If you cross the border unlawfully, even a first offense, then we're going to prosecute you", Sessions said.

Sessions and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting Director Thomas Homan will reportedly be making the announcement in San Diego on Monday.

Crossing the US border without authorization is already a misdemeanor on the first offense, and can be a felony for people who have been previously taken out of the U.S.

It corresponds with a Department of Justice "zero-tolerance policy" for illegal border crossings, under which Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered federal prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against all referrals for illegally crossing the border, as possible.

Sessions also said that families who illegally cross the border may be separated after their arrest, with children sent to juvenile shelters while their parents are sent to detention facilities.

Sessions said the USA will put in place a "zero tolerance policy for illegal entry on our southwest border". "If you're smuggling a child, then we are going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law".

Elia Viviani wins Stage 2 as Rohan Dennis takes pink
Italy's Elia Viviani sprinted to victory for a second successive day at the Giro d'Italia as the Big Start in Israel concluded. In 2014, the Giro started in Belfast, but this year's opening weekend in Israel is the first time it's been outside of Europe.

"It's obvious that we can not take everyone who wants to come here without also hurting the interests of the citizens we are sworn to serve and protect".

According to the report, families that are detained for illegal crossings have typically been kept together in the past.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions gestures as he speaks at the California Peace Officers' Association 26th Annual Law Enforcement Legislative Day on March 7, 2018, in Sacramento.

The draconian new policy is expected to send a flood of deportation cases - and legal challenges - into federal courts.

Considering that the rates of illegal crossing across the border have already dropped during the Trump Administration, this new measure only seeks to continue to establish fear and terror in the shoes of so many immigrants who desperately seek to save their lives and those of their children when crossing the border "illegally".
