Brad Marchand #63 of the Boston Bruins looks on during Game Two of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Amalie Arena on April 30, 2018 in Tampa, Florida.

According to the NHL, Campbell put Marchand on notice that his actions are unacceptable and similar behaviour in the future will lead to supplemental discipline.

After the game Callahan said he did not know the difference between licking someone's face and spitting in it.

As you'll remember, Marchand went in for the tongue kill in the first round against the Toronto Maple Leafs when he licked Leo Komarov.

Marchand got up close and personal with Callahan after a whistle with 1:21 left in the second period, then leaned in and tried to lick Callahan's face. I don't know if there is discipline for spitting in someone's face.

Callahan hopes the National Hockey League reviews the play to determine if Marchand should be punished. He was suspended five games earlier this season for elbowing the Devils' Marcus Johansson, a ban that bridged the NHL's All-Star break in Tampa where Marchand, allowed to participate in the festivities, was heartily booed and embraced his villain roll, repeatedly egging on the crowd.

DD were 59-2 at the end of the powerplay, added 69-2 in the middle overs, and added a further 70 runs in the final overs. In reply, Rishabh Pant made a match of it with a 45-ball 79 after Daredevils were reduced to 74 for four .

After being told what Callahan said, Marchand responded by saying to reporters, "That's cute. But for me it's worse, if not the same".

For his part, Marchand insisted Callahan had it coming.

In an in-game interview following the hit, Lightning head coach Jon Cooper told NBC's Pierre McGuire that Marchand's low hit is the type that "ends careers".

When asked why he took the unorthodox approach, Marchand said that Callahan "punched me four times in the face, so, you know, he just kept getting close. nothing big", ESPN reported.

"There is absolutely no place in our game for that".
