UN Security Council president says he heard heart-breaking stories from Rohingyas

  • European Council imposes new measures on Myanmar

The UN Security Council is visiting Burma and Bangladesh starting this week to assess the state of the Rohingya.

Almost 700,000 members of the ethnic minority group crossed into Bangladesh after Myanmar military launched a military crackdown in Rakhine state on August 25, 2017.

Mansour said they should not raise the expectation about a quick solution but they want to help all the parties concerned to speed up the process on the implementation of the deal signed between the two countries.

Further, the delegates were debriefed by the local administration of Border Guard Bangladesh about the on-going Bangladesh crises.

The 15-member panel has been trying for months to get to Myanmar and see first-hand northern Rakhine State - just across the border from Bangladesh - from where the refugees have fled.

The delegation will submit report once they go back to NY after wrapping the visit on May 2.

The United Nations Security Council, after visiting the Rohingya camp here on Sunday, said that there was no magic solution.

"We are standing here to demand justice as they (Myanmar military) have killed our men and tortured our women so much, so we are compelled to seek justice for those abuses", Rohingya refugee Sajida Begum told Reuters. "The threat of raising this issue in the Security Council shouldn't be used as a leverage for the Myanmar government to cooperate".

"This is indeed a very complex issue".

Past year he dramatically pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord. But Macron indicated that Trump was willing to work on a more expansive agreement.

Bangladesh's acting foreign secretary, M. Khurshed Alam, said the delegation's visit is "very significant", with worldwide pressure on Myanmar continuing to mount to ensure the safe and voluntary return of the refugees, who are seeking protection from the United Nations.

They acknowledged that there is a crisis and problem lies there in their (Rohingyas') expulsion, their treatment and the fact that they had to flee Rakhine to Bangladesh.

At Kutupalong, hundreds of refugees staged a protest.

Myanmar has said the military operation in Rakhine is aimed at rooting out extremists.

"We hope the Security Council will carry out solo investigations of our difficulties and how our demands are and to probe and settle our difficulties", said Abdul Rahim, one of the participants in the rally at the Kutupalong camp in Bangladesh's Ukhia's district.

"The lack of a U.N. Security Council resolution has left the Myanmar government convinced that it has literally gotten away with mass murder", Kenneth Roth, the rights watchdog's executive director, told reporters in Yangon on Friday as he called on the United Nations to refer the Rohingya crisis the International Criminal Court.

But a delegate representing Russian Federation, one of the council's five permanent members with power to veto resolutions by the world's top global peace and security body, said there was "no magic stick" for solving the cross-border humanitarian crisis.

The council will hold talks with Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticised for failing to speak out in defence of the Rohingya, and with Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Without new funding, tens of thousands of people who poured into the camps, fleeing violence triggered in Myanmar last August will be at risk, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) cautioned.
